Tongues
What are they and why do they exist?
What language did God speak with Adam and Eve?
What language did the people building the Tower of Babel use?
First mentioned in prophecy: Isaiah mentioned four things in this prophecy. Isaiah 28:9-13
i) To whom shall God teach knowledge and make to understand? "Whom shall he teach knowledge? And whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts". Isa 28:9
ii) God will make it so simple that He will repeat it over and over, "For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:" Isa. 28:10
iii) How will God speak to His people? "For with stammering lips and another tongue will He speak to this people". Isa. 28:11
iv) And what was the outcome? "To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. Isa. 28:12 (Being willfully ignorant). This was also quoted by Paul in 1 Cor. 14:21 concerning tongues. "In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord."
The word stammering in Hebrew is la-eg meaning buffoon or clownish; jester; foreigner; speak unintelligibly; mock; laugh. The idea here is, that since the people wouldn't listen to God speaking through the prophets, and relegated their message as adaptable only to children, He would speak to them in a way they didn't like and give them knowledge through the language of a foreigner as a sign of their unbelief. This was experienced on the day of Pentecost when, after the Spirit baptism, the people held them to laughter, scorn, ridicule and thought they were drunk Acts 2:15. "For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day". Though He was speaking line upon line, line upon line, precept upon precept, precept upon precept, they would not listen, and thus fall backward and be broken and snared and taken Isa. 28:13. "But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken". This is quoted by Paul in 1Cor. 14:21 speaking on tongues "In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord".
Occurrences in the Bible
a)Acts 2:8-11 On the day of Pentecost. At this time they were speaking in 15 different languages to the travelers who had remained for Pentecost. "And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God".
b) Acts 9:17 Paul received the baptism in the Spirit. It doesn't say that he spoke in tongues here but we do know he "spoke in tongues more than they all" 1Cor. 14:18.
Acts 917 "And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost". 1 Cor. 14:18 "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all".
c) Acts 10:46 The Gentiles at Cornielius' house "For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God". They knew that the Gentiles had received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit "for they heard them speak in tongues". This is the first time the Gentiles "received the like gift as we did" Acts 11:17. When did they receive it? At Pentecost.
d) The disciples at Ephesus. Acts 19:2 "He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? A curious first question upon meeting new converts don't you think? Then in Act 19:6 "And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied".
e) Acts 8:17 It doesn't actually say that they spoke in tongues here but, it did say that Simon, a man of many miracles, saw something that made him want to buy the gift. v18. I propose that he saw people he knew all his life speak in a language they didn't know. (Keep this in the context of all five occurrences).
What is it called?
a) Stammering lips and another tongue. Isa. 28:11
b) Speaking with new tongues. Mar. 16:17.
c) Other tongues. Acts 2.
d) Speaking with tongues. Acts 10:46.
e) Unknown tongues. 1Cor. 14:2.
What is it for?
a) A rest and a refreshing. Isa. 28:9-13 "To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear".
b) A sign to the unbeliever 1Cor. 14:22 "Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not..."
c) When you don't know what to pray. Rom. 8:26 "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered".
d) For worshiping God. Phil. 3:3 " For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit".
e) Intercession for the saints Eph. 6:18 "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints".
f) Increased faith. Jude 20 "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost".
g) For the edifying or building up of your spirit 1Cor. 14:4 "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself..."
h) For singing and praying to God 1 Cor. 14:15 " What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also".
It is the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
It is a sign for the unbeliever. 1 Cor. 14:22.
a) The three accounts in Acts 2:4; 10:45-46; and 19:6 show that it occurred when they were baptised in the Spirit.
b) The account in Acts 8:18 says that Simon saw something. What could he see that would make him want to buy the gift?
c) The account with Paul in Acts 9:17 linked with 1Cor. 14:18. "I thank God I speak in tongues more than you all".
d) Peter's statement in Acts 11:16-17 states that they received the baptism in the Holy Spirit and his statement in Acts 10:46 says he knew they had received because they heard them speak with tongues!
e) Jesus' statement in Mark 16:17 says that these signs shall follow them that believe "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues". Peter says "repent, be baptized, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost" Acts 2:38.
f)There are tongues as a prayer tongue (no man understands him only God 1Cor. 14:2, 28), Mark 16, and there is the church gift of 1Cor. 12:10, 28-30 when, if exercised as a church gift, must be interpreted 1Cor. 14:13, 27.
g) The prayer language in 1Corinthians is in verses 2,4,14,15,18,28; the rest are the church gift. A church gift is for use inside the church meetings, whereas, the prayer language is for one's own edification and support.
Exploding commonly held myths concerning speaking in tongues.
a) Myth 1: Speaking in tongues in not for today. It was a gift for the early church only and has been done away with 1 Cor.13:8-10.
Exploded: That which is perfect that comes in 1Cor. 13:10 is not the Bible but Jesus Himself, so, we haven't put away childish things yet. Have we put away faith, hope, and love?. 1Cor. 1:7 states we will lack in no gift until Jesus comes, verifying 1Cor. 13:10.
b) Myth 2: It is of the Devil.
Exploded: The Pharisees relegated the things of the Spirit to the devil and Jesus called this blasphemy of the Holy Spirit Mat. 12:31-32. True, the Devil does counterfeit the things of God, but, don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. Always try the spirits to see if it is valid 1John 4:1.
c) Myth 3: I can be baptized in the Spirit without speaking in tongues.
Exploded: You can be born again and not have the gifts of the Spirit. You can have something and be ignorant of it so therefore it will be unused ie: Give a new Cadillac to a jungle native. To be baptized in the Spirit and not speak in tongues is because of one or more reasons:
(1) Ignorance of what God has for you and wants from you.
(2) Too proud to do something you don't understand, and is highly controversial.
(3) God said it would be controversial as stated in Isa. 28:12-13. Don't be one to not listen and fall backward and be snared and taken.
d) Myth 4: If He wants me to have it He will give it to me.
Exploded: You get things from God by first understanding what He has for you, and then appropriate it by faith. Jesus said that God gives the Holy Spirit to them that ask (Luke 11:13) and obey (Acts 5:32).
e) Myth 5: It is the least of the gifts and it only edifies me anyway.
Exploded: Because it is listed last in 1Cor. 12:10 doesn't mean it is the least. Also, it is equal to prophecy when it is interpreted 1Cor. 14:5. Paul said, "I speak in tongues more than you all". Scholars say that the church in Corinth consisted of about 60,000 Christians. His time was valuable therefore I find it hard to believe that he would waste it on unimportant things.
Conclusion:
Logic says that if God has something for you, it has to be better than what you have for yourself, right? Why kick against the pricks? Don't remain willingly ignorant. God said it, I believe it, that settles it!

The Need for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Let us go on to maturity, and this we will do if _____________________. Heb 6:1-3.
In this section we will discuss the doctrine of baptisms.
A) Baptism into the _________________. (Salvation 1Cor. 12:13
B) Baptism into ____________. (Putting off the flesh Col. 2:11)
C) Baptism into the ________ __________ (Anointing of Power Acts 2:4)
1) Baptism into the body of Christ. (Salvation)
Q. Who is doing the baptizing?
A. ________ ________________.
a) "For by one _________ are ______ all baptized into _____ ________" 1Cor 12:13
b) "For as many of you as have been baptized into __________ have put on (one with) Christ" Gal 3:27.
c) "For there is one ___________, one __________, one_____________" Eph. 4:5. This is the baptism into Christ where you become one with the body of Christ (born again). Without this one all others are meaningless 1 Cor.12:13.
d) "We now, being His ____________, (Eph 1:22-23) have the Spirit dwelling in us. 1Cor. 3:16
2)Baptism into water. Mat. 28:19.
Q. Who is doing the baptizing? A.______________.
3)Baptism into the Holy Spirit. Luk 3:16; Joh1:33.
Q. Who is doing the baptizing?
A. _____________.
a) These three make up the kingdom of God. In order to enter the kingdom of God you must be baptized into His body, into water, into the Spirit.
WAIT A MINUTE! In order to go to heaven you only need to be born again! True, but to enter the kingdom of God you must have all three. Did you know there was a difference in_______________ ______________, even as many as the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of God? The kingdom of heaven is exactly that, in the heavens. The kingdom of God is within you, Luke. 9:27. Kingdom means dominion of a King. Now, can you start to get the picture as to why so many Christians profess Christ but do not have the King on His throne in their lives? They make Him savior (kingdom of heaven after they die) but don't make Him Lord (kingdom of God). They have no power to live the overcoming kingdom life.
4)Parable of kingdom entry.
a) Jesus spoke in parables. The disciples didn't understand, neither did the people. Why did He do it?
_________________________ Mat. 13;10-11.
b)In John 3:3 Nicodemus didn't understand what Jesus meant when He said, "_______________________". But look at verse 5...If you are also baptized in _________ and in the ______, you can enter the kingdom of God.
c)Jesus set the example. He, of all people, knew what the requirements were to enter God's presence with power. He left us an example. He was born of the Spirit Mt. 1:20, baptized in water by John the Baptist Mark 1:9-10, then anointed with power 1 John 2:27 by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove Mat. 3:16. He did nothing for God until He took care of the essentials. Should we do less? Do you want to enter God's presence as He did?
d) Some might say, "I have done this but I have no power". I also say, some profess to KNOW Him but have no fruit! Make sure that what you have is real, not just because everyone else is doing it. It is by __________ you are saved through __________ Eph. 2:8.
5) Types and Shadows:
a) Salvation is often referred to as: born again, repentance, and blood.
b) Water is mostly referred to as water, Word.
c) At Pentecost Acts 2:37 they said..."______ _______ ___ ____?" They didn't say "what shall we do to be saved?" In Acts 2:38 Peter answered and said "repent and be baptized, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost".
d) Acts 8:5-17 says in verse 12, "They believed the things concerning the ___________ ____ ______. In verse 12 it also says they were __________. In verse 15 they received_____ _________________.
e) Acts 19:1-5 says they ___________, were ________, were baptized in __________________.
f) 1 John 5:8 says there are three that bear record in earth, the ___________, the __________, and the______________.
6) The children of Israel:
a) They were saved by the _____________________ when it covered the entrance of their living place.
b) They were symbolically baptized in _________when they passed through the red sea.
c) They were symbolically baptized in the___________ when the cloud descended upon them.
d) 1Cor. 10:1-2 says they were all baptized,
1. Into ________________ (a type of deliverer or a type of Christ).
2. In the __________________ (the water completely covered them as it does for us in water baptism).
3. In the __________ (the Spirit or Pnuema or breath is the Spirit of Christ. The vapor represented the Spirit)
7)Our Example: 1 Cor 10:6,11 is to be baptized into Jesus, water, and Spirit.
a) The Blood delivered them from Egypt (the world). The water separated them from the world and they entered into the wilderness. The cloud allowed them to make it through the wilderness.
8) Abraham followed the same pattern:
a) Believed God Gen. 15:6
b) Baptized Gen. 15:17; Gen. 17:11 (Circumcision was to the Jew what Baptism is to the Christian Col. 2:11-12. If the Jew was not circumcised he could be a part of nothing).
c) Received the Holy Spirit Gen. 17:5. God added the "H" to his and Sarah's names the "H" is ha or breath of God, that is the Spirit of God. (The Jews do not even write or speak the name of God out of respect. They believe it is too holy for mere mortal man to do, so they just use the breath sound ha).
